What is seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, chronic skin condition affecting three to five percent of the population.1 While this condition can affect people of any age, seborrheic dermatitis most commonly affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60 years and occurs more often in men than women.5 Infants may also experience the condition during the first few months of life, when it is called "cradle cap." 1

Is seborrheic dermatitis contagious?

No, seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious, and it is not an allergy. There is no way of predicting who may develop the condition, but you cannot catch it from anyone who has it.4

What can I do to manage my symptoms?

In addition to daily skin care recommendations from your healthcare provider, he or she may suggest a medication to treat your seborrheic dermatitis. Xolegel Gel is a prescription skin medication specifically for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis for adults and children 12 years and older. It contains the active ingredient ketoconazole, the antifungal agent most often prescribed for seborrheic dermatitis.14 Ask your healthcare provider if Xolegel Gel is right for you.

How does Xolegel Gel work?

Xolegel Gel contains the active ingredient ketoconazole, the most frequently prescribed antifungal agent for seborrheic dermatitis.14 The speculation is that ketoconazole may reduce the amount of Malassezia furfur yeast on the skin and can therefore minimize the severity of seborrheic dermatitis. However, this theory has not been proven. Although ketoconazole has been shown to improve many other conditions, Xolegel Gel is approved for use only as a skin medication to treat seborrheic dermatitis.

Is Xolegel Gel safe to use?

Xolegel Gel contains the active ingredient ketoconazole, which has been prescribed for over 20 years. Its formula is steroid free and does not contain sulfites, an ingredient commonly found in skin products that could cause irritation in some patients. In clinical trials, less than one percent of patients who used Xolegel Gel reported dryness or irritation.9 Although its active ingredient ketoconazole is used to treat many other conditions, Xolegel Gel is only approved for use as a skin medication to treat seborrheic dermatitis.

Can I use Xolegel Gel with makeup?

Yes. The non-greasy, steroid-free gel formulation can be worn under makeup or sunscreen. Simply wait 20 minutes after applying Xolegel Gel to use your other products. Furthermore, the once-daily application allows you the flexibility of applying at any time of the day that's convenient for you.
